GREEN INITIATIVES BY DALMIA CEMENT REACHING A WIDER AUDIENCE

Dalmia Cement has been undertaking green initiatives at the plant over the years. The inputs from the DPM plant indicate that 80,000 trees have been planted and a range of measures taken such as installation of Electrostatic Precipitators etc. to reduce pollution. The focus on PPC itself is widely acknowledged to reduce the carbon footprint of the company. It was decided to explore reaching a wider audience on this front and therefore, green initiatives were planned; it was decided to take external assistance for the same and to participate in a few pilot projects to gain a better understanding of the process and the kind of activities comprising a typical tree planting drive. Hence the entire exercise was experimental.

Pilot Project

A pilot project was planned with three organisations identified as possible partners for implementing green initiatives; DCBL's role in these pilots would be more that of observers.

The first of them – with Exnora – was flagged off on Saturday, September 3rd at Panruti, Cuddalore district. Exnora had invited the Hon'ble Minister for Special Programmes Implementation, Tamil Nadu, Mr.M.C.Sampath as the Chief Guest who planted and watered the first few trees in the premises of the Govt. Hospital at Panruti as part of the programme to plant 1000 trees in nearby areas. The balance would be done by Exnora over the next few days.

In his speech the Chief Guest indicated the TN Govt. had earmarked Rs. 62 crores for planting one crore trees throughout the state. The Hon'ble Minister also acknowledged the role of Dalmia Cement in the project in the speech.

The leading Tamil dailies were represented at the function. The report of Daily Thanthi and Dinamani are attached.
